History of Hartland & Co.

Hartland & Co. was founded as an entrepreneurial start-up in 1989 by Tom Hartland. Tom was a pioneer in independent investment consulting. He and his early backers believed that independence in structure and spirit was essential to objective and effective service to clients. Since our inception we have remained fiercely independent. Today our firm is owned entirely by employees and members of our board of directors. We are not affiliated with brokerage firms, banks or money managers. We have no revenue sharing arrangements and are not part of a larger financial services or parent company. 

Throughout our history, Hartland & Co. has promoted professionals from within. Our director of research, our director of consulting and our chief administrative officer are all partners in the firm and have been with Hartland & Co. for many years. The prospect of becoming an owner of the firm is a strong inducement for talented individuals to join and remain with Hartland & Co.

In 2009, Chief Executive Tom Hartland and the board of directors decided to invest further in the leadership of the firm. Dave Fulton, a 25-year industry veteran, was hired as president. In addition to Dave, several outstanding people have joined Hartland & Co., including Carl Tippit, Greg Althans and Satricia Rice to further bolster the leadership of the firm. They join an outstanding group of Hartland & Co. professionals.

Our firm is guided by a strong board of directors. These directors, many of whom are shareholders, have had distinguished careers in private equity, banking, corporate finance, law and marketing. The rigorous oversight they provide is extremely beneficial for a firm of our size and in our industry.
