Hartland & Co. and Chess Financial Merge to Create Region's Preeminent Institutional Investment and Wealth Advisory Firm

The Board of Directors of Hartland & Co. is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Chess Financial Corporation for the two firms to merge. The merger, scheduled to be completed on October 1, 2011, combines two established Cleveland financial advisory firms and creates a preeminent independent institutional investment and wealth advisory firm. Chess Financial will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hartland & Co.
Founded in 1989, Hartland & Co. is an institutional and private client investment advisory firm. Chess Financial, founded in 1986, is a comprehensive wealth advisory firm serving families, individuals and related entities nationwide. The combined company will have over $11 billion in assets under advisement.
The merger combines the institutional investment capabilities of Hartland & Co. with the tax, estate and financial planning expertise of Chess Financial. Thomas Hartland, founder and Chief Executive of Hartland & Co., says, "Merging with Chess bolsters our institutional investment capabilities and provides our private clients with deeper wealth management services." With the addition of Chess, Hartland & Co. will serve more than 300 institutional and private clients nationwide and employ 47 professionals in Northeast Ohio - nearly doubling the firm's size.
Mr. Hartland will continue in his role as Chief Executive of Hartland & Co. as will Mr. David Fulton as President and Chief Operating Officer. Chess founder Mr. F. Carl Walter will become Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hartland & Co. and Mr. Bradley Turner, current President of Chess will assume a senior management role at Hartland.
