We meet and vet hundreds of investment managers each year, through direct on-site visits, conference calls and meetings in our offices. The database we have created over the years contains information on thousands of investment managers, mutual funds and investment vehicles.

We have a talented team of dedicated research professionals, but what sets Hartland & Co. apart is that all of our professionals are deeply involved in the research process. This means that the same people that meet with clients are also responsible for researching investment opportunities and determining their propriety for client portfolios. This is a significant strength of the firm and a great benefit to our clients because it integrates research with our investment consulting practices.

Moreover, we are independent consultants and are not affiliated with any brokerage firm, bank or investment manager. We do not receive or share revenues with any firm. Our clients are assured that our research is objective and conducted solely for their interest.

Qualitative and Quantitative Investment Manager Research

Our research process focuses on narrowing thousands of managers, funds and investment vehicles to a top quality list that can be introduced to our clients. Once a manager is selected, we continuously monitor its performance and when necessary, recommend terminating its services.

In this process we consider both qualitative and quantitative factors.

Qualitative factors include understanding the organizational attributes of a firm – its people, ownership, history, clients and processes. Quantitative factors include statistical analyses of a firm’s portfolios: consistency, returns, volatility and peer group comparisons. Our analysts and consultants write in-depth analyses of investment managers before introducing them to client portfolios. Our process is disciplined, thorough and repeatable.
